More sabre rattling. The AP news report says that the Iranian naval exercises could bring their warships into close proximity to US warships.

Iran has got a fairly significant navy. They have 26 submarines. Four of the submarines are reported to be the Russian Kilo class which is a 1982 vintage technology. The Kilo class submarine looks like it has about the same capabilities as the German WWII U-boats except that it may be armed with anti-ship missiles – a potential game changer.

The Kilo class submarine also is armed with torpedoes and mines which are also potential game changers.

According to this UPI dot com news report Iran has started building its own submarines: “Iran set to unveil new submarine class”

Associated Press report:

Iran’s navy to hold drill in international waters

TEHRAN, Iran (AP) — Iran’s navy chief said Thursday his forces plan to hold a 10-day drill in international waters beyond the strategic Strait of Hormuz at the mouth of the Persian Gulf, an exercise that could bring Iranian ships into proximity with U.S. Navy vessels.

The drill will be Iran’s latest show of strength in the face of mounting international criticism over its controversial nuclear program, which the West fears is aimed at producing atomic weapons — charges that Tehran denies, insisting the program is for peaceful purposes only. Iran’s navy earlier this year had warships in the Suez canal for the first time in three decades or since the Shah of Iran was in power. The Shah of Iran was  puppet for the US government.
